Miley Cyrus and the world of Sci-Fi
(plus comic books, wrestling, and a few other things)
or
The cost of mistakes and the demands of perfection
Intro
This is an idea I've had in my mind for a while now. Mostly because I like her music, and find her to be quite funny on her show 'Hannah Montana' at times. It may not be Sci-Fi, but I will have quite a few Sci Fi themes popping up here and there.
Basically this article is about a girl. A girl by the name of Miley Cyrus, formerly known as Destiny Hope Cyrus. Brought up in Nashville, Tennessee. Second generation performer-her father is Billy Ray Cyrus who performed the song Achy Brakey Heart, which led to the Weird Al parody Achy Brakey Song. A girl of Christian faith, and loved to sing.
She had (and still does have[for the time being?]) a great smile. And I find a great singing voice. Like many kids her age she had a wish to perform. She did one or two acting jobs (one of which was on a show her father starred in called 'Doc') until she landed her big break with the role of 'Hannah Montana'. A role she was considered too young for, but producers kept coming back to her for selection.
And they kept coming back until she was the final girl chosen. Originally she wanted to read for the role of Hannah's best friend Lilly, but she was in the end chosen for the role of Hannah. Since then she had been thrust in the spotlight. Emphasis on the word 'thrust'.
A hot TV show. Albums sold. The love of teenage girls and boys everywhere. A concert movie that sold out. Miley Cyrus was riding a rocket ship to the stars and loving every minute of it.
I guess it was ony a matter of time before that rocket ship started having technical issues. Or rather when the other shoe dropped, depending on how you look at it.
Like most stars in Hollywood Miley found herself the center of controversey. Starting out it seemed innocent enough. Problem with ticket admissions for a fan club and the use of a Hannah double for a concert when Miley started breaking out with her album 'Meet Miley Cyrus' which showcased her own music and style. A slight difference from Hannah Montana, but still wholesome.
Then the controversies started to get heavier. The outcries louder. A list of scandals started to appear. Scandals that were seemingly more severe than ticket admissions and a body double. First on the list were a series of pictures that started to appear on the internet that had Miley doing provocative underwear shots. Shots that were supposedly intended for Nick Jonas, her boyfriend at that time. Shots that found their way into public viewing thanks to a hacker that broke into her computer.
The most serious to follow was from Vanity Fair photographer Annie Leibovitz, who convinced Miley to do an 'artistic' shot where she was dressed in a sheet and her bare shoulders and back was exposed. Parents were concerned this conveyed an image of sexuality that Miley should not have portrayed. This shot, combined with the Jonas underwear photos, started the birth of an unflattering nickname to say the least. That nickname was 'Slutty'.
Miley tried to press on, but more scandals started to appear. Her dating of a 20 year old underwear model named Justin Gaston set up by her father Billy Ray Cyrus. Justin was also a failed contestant on the show 'Nashville Star' but Billy Ray took him home to meet his daughter anyway, despite him being two years overage. Some felt Miley should have stayed with Nick Jonas to reinforce the teeny bopper romantic ideal I guess.
Another one, and the most serious to date if you ask me, was when a picture appeared on the net where Miley and others, including Justin, made a slanted eyed gesture and had a picture taken that leaked out onto the net. George Wu, the head of a group called the OCA, commented that the picture was racially offensive and demanded that Miley apologize for it. The only other ones that notice was taken of was Justin, her then 20 year old boyfriend, and another member of the Asian Community who made a wide eyed gesture in contrast to the slanted eyes everyone else did.
Regardless the picture led to a shock comediane named Margaret Cho doing a parody song calling her 'a disgrace', and Miley being sued by a woman named Lucie Kim for an undisclosed amount of money. Some say it's $5 million. Some say $1 million. And others have said $5 billion. It has been said the money would have been for the members of the Pacific Island Community that Miley offended. Others would probably say it was a taking to the cleaners. As of this writing the suit has ended, but some effects may still linger.
Jamie Foxx made some unflattering comments out of apparent humor saying Miley should make a sex tape, do drugs, and become a lesbian. Billy Ray did not take to those comments well, and Mr. Foxx apologized. Miley wanted to hang with her favorite band Radiohead, but they said 'no'. When she said in supposed jest that she was going to 'ruin them' Radiohead commented that Miley was not deserving of 'entitlement' or something like that. Regardless the media seemed to applaud Radiohead.
And just recently there was an incident involving a pole on an ice cream cart that gave the impression that Miley was doing a 'pole dance'. Blogger Perez Hilton heralded it as 'the return of Slutty Cyrus'. And just recently at the age of 17 she has gotten a tattoo onder her breast that said 'Just breathe' which despite it being the slogan for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation caused yet another uproar. All this from a girl who says she wants to be a positive role model.
Doesn't look like a good track record does it? From the descriptions here it seems like she's far from a positive influence and seems to be going down the path of Brittney Spears and Lindsey Lohan. Wild party girls with no regards for consequences, ethics, or anything.
But is that really the case? Is Miley really the 'bad girl' the media seems to want to make her out to be? Or is it something worse.
Could she have actually made....mistakes? Believe it or not to some making mistakes is the WORST thing ever. More so than being bad. Especially in a world where images of 'perfection' are still in play. And demanded.
They adhere to a belief that mistakes are 'imperfections' and that 'Imperfections will NOT be tolerated.'
As this article continues on I will be looking at Miley's career, her mistakes, and other things. But I will also do it in a way no one else probably considered. As I will be making comparisons to select Sci Fi shows and comic books I've picked up on, as well as wrestling, TV, and other odds and ends. A unique view I know, but then Science Fiction fans have been known to think outside the box on multiple occasions.
But before I dip into the worlds 'outside the boxes' let's start out with the so-called 'real world'. Along the way however there will be some references, markers if you will, to Sci-Fi and other genres of entertainment until we reach the 'final destination'.
